how does hypnotherapy work?

did you know?

  • Hypnotherapy was successfully used as a method of anaesthetising soldiers in the field during World War I!

how will hypnotherapy work for me?

Modern hypnotherapy has become one of the fastest growing short term natural therapies across Britain. Despite the practice of hypnotherapy dating back to the 1900’s, only now are the benefits truly being realized by the western world as a successful natural remedy for dealing with today’s challenges.

Today hypnotherapy is successfully used to deal with many problems and enjoys excellent success rates with:- Smoking Cessation, Weight Control, Stress, Panic & Anxieties Disorders, Phobias, Psoriasis And Pain Control (Including Childbirth).

Hypnotherapy the technical bit

The mind is made up of 2 parts; the conscious and the sub-conscious. The conscious mind deals with 'here and now' activities and is the smaller of the two parts. It is thought to have the capacity to deal with roughly 7 bits of information at any one time. It is used to remember bits of information you do not need to commit to memory e.g. a telephone number you may be given for immediate use and repeat out loud until you have keyed the numbers in your phone. Without a conscious effort to commit these to your longer term memory, the information will be lost from your memory.

The sub-conscious mind on the other hand is significantly larger and deals with vast amounts of information simultaneously. It is the part of you which deals with activities such as balance, emotions, learned behaviour and memories. At the most basic level, it tells your heart when to beat. Additionally it continues to work during sleep and thus is the part responsible for dreams. It is the information stored in this part of the brain which is accessed during hypnotherapy.

Access to the sub-conscious has been shown to be more effective when the mind is deeply relaxed. It is thought that the mind has less distractions when relaxed and can therefore focus more intently. The idea of hypnotherapy then, is that a person is put into a deeply relaxed state to produce long lasting change.

The hypnotic state places the mind in a deeply relaxed state which allows it to become more responsive to suggestion. Studies have shown that in this state, you are neither unconscious, nor asleep, but have normal mental activity. Changes are achieved by the therapist making suggestions to the part of the mind responsible for the unwanted behaviour. and changing the sub-conscious responses to something more agreeable
