Why am I like this?
Phobias are part of the larger anxiety family. A phobia is an anxiety disorder.
Phobias can make a sufferer feel trapped, isolated, out of control, and sometimes that they are going mad. A sufferer has a conscious realisation that the object of fear is irrational and this knowledge only heightens the frustration.
Anxiety can arise unexpectedly, as in panic, or gradually over minutes, hours, or days. Anxiety can last for any length of time, from a few seconds to years. It ranges in intensity from scarcely detectable worries to full-blown panic attacks.
Phobias are split into 2 categories:-
Specific (irrational fear of specific things)
Social (fear of being humiliated in public)
1 million people in the UK suffer the same as you...
Spiders (Arachnephobia/Arachnophobia)
Speaking in public (Glossophobia)
Flying (Aviophobia or Aviatophobia or Pteromerhanophobia )
Confined spaces (Claustrophobia)
Open spaces (Agoraphobia)
Blushing (Erythrophobia, Erytophobia or Ereuthophobia))
Specific phobias are triggered by the presence or anticipation of a specific object or thing eliciting an anxious response in the sufferer. This can be anything from a rapid heartbeat, to shortness of breath, to a full blown panic attack.
Social phobia - sometimes mistaken for shyness - sufferers have an irrational fear of embarrassing or humiliating themselves in public situations and thus being the object of scrutiny or ridicule. Sufferers seek to endure or avoid those situations and thus the anxiety which accompany them. Social phobia is a very common type of phobia, one of the most specific and well known being fear of public speaking. Others social phobias include a fear of blushing, dating, restaurants and/or parties.
