did you know?

  • 12 million adults consult a GP each year for mental health problems. Most are anxiety and depression related
  • It is estimated that nearly 3 in every 10 employees will experience a mental health problem in any 1 year
  • Watching television in not a form of deep relaxation as it does not allow the mind to relax
  • Exercising is not a form of deep relaxation as it does not allow the body to relax
  • Stress is not a medical condition in its own right - it's root derives from anxiety, which is the underlying condition

you're the odd one out if you're not stressed...

Dealing with stressful situations is an inevitable part of modern life, so too should be the practice of relaxation.  The body will do its best to combat the effects of tension but building this up on a daily basis at the rate we do, becomes a steep task.  The body sends warning signals out into our awareness, to highlight our internal imbalance and the need for rejuvenation, however, we are so used to living our lives in this way, that we do not understand the signs.  Some common symptoms are below:-

·         tense muscles
·         pounding or racing heart
·         feeling faint or light headed
·         stomach upset, in a knot or loss of appetite
·         migraines or headaches
·         aches & pains
·         sense of pressure, lack of time
·         disturbed or difficult sleep or grinding your teeth at night
·         waking up tired
·         loss or lack of concentration

It is important to note that some of these symptoms can point towards other medical problems - if you are unsure, you should consult your GP.

stress can lead to serious illness!

  • 1 in 4 people will experience some kind of mental health problem in the course of a year

  • Depression affects 1 in 5 older people living in the community and 2 in 5 living in care homes
  • British men are three times as likely as British women to die by suicide
  • The UK has one of the highest rates of self harm in Europe, at 400 per 100,000 population
  • Only one in 10 prisoners has no mental disorder

As mentioned above, stress is a term used to describe anxiety.  Generally conceived to be of a lesser degree than someone diagnosed as suffering from a specific anxiety disorder. We all experience stress in our daily lives, although the causes and the way we respond to them will be different for everybody. The degree to which anxiety effects our daily lives is what determines our condition.

Stress can either relate to physical, mental or emotional pressures but the physical reaction we have to the pressure is the same for everyone.  It is known as the ‘fight or flight’ response.

A term first coined by the American Physiologist Walter Bradford Cannon, theorized animals had an instinctive physiological reaction to threats enabling them to be more prepared for any eventuality.  In humans when the body senses danger, a signal is sent from the brain to redirect blood to the hands and the feet enabling the person to either fight or flight (run away).

In ancient times this was a critical line of defence when danger was ever present.  Now, however, the response, although occasionally useful in situations of real danger, is not something we generally have much call for. What tends to happen is that our heightened awareness i.e. the fight and flight response and the feelings which go with it are triggered by memories, imagination, conscience and moral beliefs.  Being in a heightened state tenses our muscles and puts our brain on high alert.  All of which requires vast amounts of energy.

Today, there are many situations which trigger this response; long commutes, supermarket queues, deadlines or difficult work/social situations. The way we react to these eventually becomes a habit that, repeated again and again, becomes draining and exhausting and is the reason many of us feel tired after a particularly stressful week or event.

Relaxation then, should be an essential part of our modern lives.

what is the best way to relax?

Most people will say their relaxation time is spent in front of the TV, at the gym, walking or maybe socialising.  The flaw with this, is that all of these activities are just that; activities.  None of them focus on enabling the body AND the mind to slow down and recuperate. Is it any wonder then, that many of us are constantly in a state of tension if we do little or nothing to relieve it?

Relaxation should focus on both the body and the mind, removing tension from the muscles and reducing the "inner chatter" such as the thoughts and concerns that swirl around in our heads. Any process which allows you to do this will offer you many rewards. Hypnotherapy, places the body and the mind in a state of deep relaxation, allowing the muscles and the mind to relax.  It is a complete refresh for the system.

how can I use hypnotherapy to help?

Hypnotherapy can be used regularly for relaxation, for 1-off treats for yourself or as a gift to a friend or loved one.  At Leeds Hypnotherapy Centre, we also use relaxation to aid:-

  • Dental examinations
  • Pre-wedding night sleeping so you look and feel refreshed on the big day
  • Medical examinations
